Overeating is not going to make you gain 10 lbs on one day but for each time you overeat your stomach will expand and the satiety signals going to your brain weakens. So, why not be a step ahead and prevent that? We know, it´s easier said than done. Just by considering preventing your overeating you are already one step closer to avoiding it this holiday ?
Holidays are the time for families coming together, eating, drinking and hygge (hoo-ga), as we would say in Danish, enjoying life´s simple pleasures with people you love. When it comes to food and drinks it´s no surprise that it is the same as last year and the year before that! There´s food, treats and alcohol everywhere.
It´s often high in fat and simple carbohydrates. The vegetables are limited and those that are present are usually soaked in dressing or sauce. You’re facing a challenge: what should you eat? It’s important not to give in and think short term because you are going to live beyond that dinner party.
Put this in mind: you can avoid overeating! By following these steps, we´ll be working on changing your mindset. It´s all about being aware of what you put in your body and how it makes you feel. Here´s the best advice our clients use to get through the holiday season. We have organized it into three sections: before, during and after the dinner party.
Before Dinner
- The best way to start a holiday feast is a morning workout! You are most likely off work anyway and let´s already boost your digestive system from sunrise.
- Don´t starve yourself before dinner. Keep eating small meals every 3 hours like you usually would do.
- Focus on your goal: maintaining your weight or weight loss.
- Visualize what´s going to be served and limit yourself to one or two of your favorite dishes/treats/drinks and enjoy it slowly and in moderation. The keyword is to prioritize, and you’ll end up with a clear conscience.
During Dinner
- Sample appetizers but don´t get carried away.
- Eat only one serving, so scan the food on the table before scooping on your plate.
- Cut down on carbs, like bread, mashed potatoes, corn bread, stuffing, and your salt intake.
- Stay away from butter, dressing, gravy and fried food as much as possible.
- Cut off the visible fat and skin from the meat.
- Take your time and enjoy your meal. Try not to wolf it down.
- Eat until you feel comfortable but not until you are full.
- Drink water!
After Dinner
- Hydrate.
- Go for a long walk, workout or go Black Friday shopping-
